Ways To Cut Business Costs

By Keren Kipfer

When it comes to running your own business, it's always best to keep the quality of your product high. However, the current weak economy makes it necessary for business owners to tighten their budget. Rather than change production, it can be a much better idea to find little ways to cut your overhead costs. Here are a few examples that can help cut your expenses.

Energy costs are often quite exorbitant, and while you certainly do not want workers to freeze or melt while at work, you can trim up to half off of your energy bill by installing programmable thermostats in the office. During the winter months, set the thermostat to around 50 degrees at night and on weekend days. During summer months, do the opposite to ensure that you aren't wasting energy. You can have the air conditioning or heat programmed to kick on an hour before staff arrives to ensure their comfort.

Computers and internet access are a big expense, but in many ways they can save a business some money. For instance, they allow a company to be virtually paperless and paper is a huge office expense, particularly if you also pay to have custom letterhead and custom envelopes printed. You can instead send memos and faxes electronically and store your documents in an online database that your employees can access. This means you don't need to have a ton of filing cabinets, and you cut costs on the labor of filing, the cost of file folders and you might even be able to decrease your office size.

Sometimes you can trim down the size of your office space or move to a less expensive area to save money. If you have employees that can work from home, this can lower your space needs or you can sublet office space to bring in some additional income which will alleviate your monthly expenditures a bit. If you think your monthly rent is too high, look for some nearby comps and talk to your landlord about lowering your costs.

Ink is a necessary item for just about any type of business. If you use a special type of continuous inkjet or drop-on-demand printer known as an id coder, you know that buying ink and make-up fluids for these coders can become quite costly. Rather than purchasing your Domino ink or VideoJet ink directly from the manufacturer, consider purchasing these supplies from a product id company.

A product id company not only provides low-cost inks for every major brand of printer, the also often sell low-cost replacement parts for your coder. You can find great deals on Imaje parts, Domino parts, Maxima parts and much more. Many of these types of companies also provide service and repairs to keep your coder running smoothly, and some sell refurbished coders, which is much less expensive than purchasing a new machine.
