This Simple Technique Could Double Your Email Open Rate

By James Kupe

If you use email marketing to promote your products and services, you really need to get as many people as you possibly can to open your messages. That's why what you write for your email's subject line is critical. If your subject line doesn't resonate with your reader, your message is never going to get opened. And if that happens, nobody's going to read anything you've written or buy what you are offering.

That's why your subject line is probably the most important part of your email message to get right. It's just like a headline in any ad, and if that subject line doesn't pique your readers' interest, you're just wasting your time trying to market with email.

One of the best ways to increase your email open rate is by using compelling subject lines that offer or promise a result to your readers. If you can include hooks such as curiosity, benefits, controversy, and other factors such as timely news or tips, that is also going to increase your open rate. Having said that, simply using a touch of curiosity is always a great place to start.

As an example, let's say your subject line is, "Is this the cutest puppy in the world?". It would most likely make people curious enough to open your message. Then you could talk about how somebody you know has a puppy, and how owning a dog relates in some way to your product or service. Once you've answered the question in the subject line, you can make an offer based on the story you just shared.

And you can go even further by promising a result or a big benefit your reader would like to have in your subject line. Then tie it all together in the message so it makes sense. It's also a very good strategy to use storytelling throughout your messages because it keeps your readers engaged and wanting more. If you end each message with a 'cliffhanger' like they do in some of those popular soap operas and series like Lost, you'll have your readers emailing you begging you to tell them what comes next.

Something to consider to make this even more powerful to split test two different subject lines and pick a winner that converts the best. You can do this with most autoresponders like Aweber. When you have a winner, resend the same message using the best subject line to anybody who didn't open the original message. You'll get a second wave people to clicking the link, and taking action on the offer you've sent them.

And finally, do some spying on the top businesses in your market. Create a Gmail account specifically for this purpose, and then opt in to as many competitors lists as you can find. Make a note of the subject lines they use, especially if they use them more than once. You should be able to get on a lot of lists, so you can see how your competitors entice people to open their emails.
