Information To Understand About Industrial Casters

By Mattie Knight

Performance and functioning of casters is highly dependent on many factors. The factors include load capacity, mode of attachment, speed of movement, and nature of the surface. When buying industrial casters, these are the factors to keep in mind among many others. It is sometimes hard to make a choice, but after reading this article, one should be in a better position to make an informed decision.

Before considering anything else, one should determine how much weight the caster can support comfortably. The maximum weight a device can support is usually incorporated into the device during production by the manufacturer. Exceeding it is likely to cause trouble. Another similar figure is the maximum weight each caster on a cart will be required to support at any given time. Usually dividing total weight and number of whets gives this figure. For maximum safety, one should choose a device with a slightly higher value.

The speed is the next factor to be considered. Casters are designed to move at different speeds under different circumstances. The speed at which the wheels can move when the cart is empty cannot be the same as when it is loaded. Exceeding the specified speed causes internal break down and eventual failure. Manufacturers can offer assistance with choice in this regard if one cannot make up their mind.

The surface of application is another very important aspect. Movement of the wheels is very effective and smooth when the surface is smooth. However, movement becomes bumpy and unidirectional if the surface is rugged. Such floors damage wheels much faster.

Similarly, casters damage floors that are made from soft materials like bamboo, wood, and ceramic. They gouge them and cause other forms of defects such as marks and scratches, which lead to loss in beauty. Such soft surfaces should be used with wheels made from soft materials like rubber and plastic.

Environment of application has often been overlooked when choosing these devices. That is a big mistake because the devices are not meant to be used in all environments. Changing the environment of application usually comes at a cost of either performance or physical integrity among others. Manufacturers are aware of this need and specify environments in which their products can be used. Finish features and wheels get most affected when environment of application is mismatched.

Many criteria can be used to classify casters. The mode of powering is one such criterion. Normally two kind of devices fall under this classification, that is, manually driven and power driven. How fast the device moves and how much force the load exerts on the wheels depend on the method of powering. Usually, power driven devices get damaged faster and easily due to more force being exerted by the load.

Incorporation of extra features into modern products has made enhanced their efficiency and functionality. The enhancements have come with an increase in prices. A single device can cost a lot of money and that is why it is important to choose carefully.
