Searching For Professional Amplifier Repair

By Matthew Allen

If you own an amplifier, both solid state and vacuum tube models will require routine inspections, and occasionally faults attended to. When an amp fails, a lot of players will have to find a suitable amplifier repair. A couple of things should be taken into consideration before you have work carried out on your expensive piece of equipment.

There are various amplifier models and each one will have different modes and functions and will vary greatly in cost. A standard amplifier head will require a separate speaker to project the sound coming from the instrument. The other kind of amp is a combination with an integrated speaker built into the housing and these models are more common for home musicians due to the compact size and the much lower cost.

A vacuum tube amp will need more maintenance than a more modern transistor model. Spare tubes are often carried by musicians and they will need replacing if they are not working properly. Any type of work that is done on tube amps should be carried out by a fully qualified technician due to the voltages that run through them and to ensure all work is guaranteed.

A transistor amp is much easier to work on and look after by the amateur technician. Simple faults can be rectified using some everyday tools and this will usually not be expensive. If the problem is serious and you are unsure, then it is better to have the job done by an expert technician, and many instrument stores will offer a repair service.

The spares needed to repair an amp can be found on the internet or in your local musical instrument store. When you buy the components you should always ensure that they are covered by a makers guarantee and that they have passed safety inspection. Second hand components can often be utilized and in cases such as speakers for a combo, this can be a less costly way to carry out a repair.

Factory made parts should always be used when at all possible on vintage amps. Using manufacturer made original parts will ensure that the value is maintained and the spares will be the same as the ones fitted when the amp was made. Many factory authorized stores will carry parts for older models and these should be used.

For amateur amp repairers there are publications available with diagrams and you can also find step by step videos to help with fixing amps. After ensuring that the correct parts have been purchased and the required tools are available you can start on your repair. Always have your electrical work examined by an engineer as many music clubs will need safety documentation for any equipment used inside their venues.

The price of the repairs will vary greatly depending on the model and work required. Costs will range from a few dollars for small repairs to thousands for a major problem. Using an internet company to do the work can sometimes be cheaper but shipping costs will have to be factored in to your budget.
